According to Leutnant Julius Meimberg of 4/JG 2 who was flying directly behind the stabschwarm, he saw Wick pull away again and at 16.13 hours, shoot down a Spitfire. His fifty-sixth victim was almost definitely 609’s Pilot Officer Paul Baillon who coincidentally had been shot down exactly one month and one day before. Keith Ogilvie, now free from his attackers, saw Baillon bale out twenty miles south of Bournemouth and although Paul’s parachute opened and he landed safely in the water, Ogilvie saw no signs of life.

It would now seem that Wick had become overconfident and, separated from his wingman and geschwader, became the victim of a lone Spitfire. This was witnessed by Oberleutnant Rudi Pflanz who reported:

After I had lost Fiby, I went low and turned for home. I saw two aircraft in front of me which I flew towards. Too late I recognised the second as a Spitfire. It shot down the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the pilot baled out. I then shot the Spitfire down; the pilot came down in the sea. I then began talking to the rescue services.
